Don't get all scared on us. You don't need to learn in-depth economics or complicated mathematics. You do, however, need to learn to "talk the talk."
First you need to learn the basics, and then you need to follow a routine on daily or weekly basis to keep up with general finance and economic events. It's not hard or time-consuming, it just takes a little help.
For our purposes here, we've put things into three categories. First, are the essentials. These are concepts you must learn before you start. Some of them you may already know. Others you may not. But read the articles and make sure you understand the concepts. Second are tips and advice for keeping up with things on a regular basis.
