Trend-based Trading and Market Timing

Good investors can identify trends and stocks based on them, but it's not for everyone

Editor's note: This is the first of two overall trading philosophies we teach at LearningMarkets.com. The other is Smart Growth Investing. They are different, and each is suited to different investing types. Many employ a blend of both. Before you decide which is right for you, read all the materials we offer, and make sure you practice paper-trading before you jump in.

Before you begin reading in this section, we offer a word of caution: Trend-trading is an active process, and it takes dedication, practice and a certain amount of skill not everyone will possess. We encourage you to begin reading the articles below and decide if it's right for you. If you decide it's something you want to try, be sure to paper-trade extensively before you put any capital at risk. If it's not for you, we recommend Smart Growth Investing instead.

Finding good stocks to buy isn't as simple as getting a tip. It involves looking in the right places for the right things.

If you're going to take active control of your investments and financial future, you've got to learn to understand trends and read some basic charts. Once you learn that, you can practice and develop your personal trend-trading skills.
